Martempering and Austempering are processes involving quenching in molten salts instead of oil. The two processes are distinct and are dealt with separately below:

MARTEMPERING

Martempering is applied to oil ( or air) hardening steels to give the same hardness of oil quenching but with less distortion and less danger or cracking.

AUSTEMPERING

This process is now used extensively for the heat treatment of this high-carbon steel parts or low-alloy Steels of thicker section and gives a much tougher product than by oil..
